Part II: Our projects
Case 1: Pre IPO strategy and restructuring - Energy and Chemicals
Oliver Wyman helped a leading energy company in China to launch its internati
onal Initial Public Offering. We assisted in the transformation of the compan
y into a globally recognized enterprise attractive to international investors
. We advised on both business and organizational restructuring, including dev
eloping the portfolio and asset strategy to maximize the value of the listed
company as well as ensure the viability of the corporate parent. We designed
individual strategies for each business line and developed performance improv
ement quick-win opportunities to create tangible value and strengthen the inv
estor story. We created a new organizational structure, developed a performan
ce management system, and structured the governance relationship to meet the
requirements of all stakeholders.
Case 2: Five-year business plan – Transport and Logistics
For a leading logistics provider in China, Oliver Wyman developed a 5-year bu
siness plan. The work included the review of the company’s major business li
nes, market and competitive analysis, and growth opportunity identification a
nd prioritization through detailed financial and market analysis. Based on th
at foundation, we developed recommended business designs specifying the organ
ization, finance, investment and high-level implementation plans. The company
has successfully and profitably entered the new growth areas.
Case 3: Organization redesign - Communications
For a leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer, Oliver Wyman led an
organizational system design effort, and worked with the company’s Board of
Directors/Executive Management Team to implement the recommendations. The rec
ommendations focused on developing a governance system, especially focused on
management teams and cross-functional committees, and on refining the execut
ive level solid line organization to align with the new management system. Th
e implementation effort required consensus building across the top 50 manager
s in the enterprise, as well as communication to a much broader set of manage
rs. Subsequent work has “deep-dived” into organization and process design f
or many of the corporation’s functional units.
Case 4: Airline fleet planning – Aviation
For a leading airline in China, Oliver Wyman built an economic modeling tool
to evaluate different fleet options and selected the best option according to
the overall fleet strategy. We analyzed the overall market situation, review
ed the client’s current fleet structure, financing and economics, and evalua
ted the client’s network and flight schedule. Using this fact base, we built
a comprehensive fleet scenario model and integrated non-quantitative conside
rations. In order to support the client’s purchase negotiation, we also high
lighted the elements that could reduce cost and increase flexibility in subse
quent OEM negotiations.
