HSBC is such a fascinating place to work because of its over 140-yearhistory in China and global coverage in over 80 countries andterritories across the world. The unmatched combination of local andinternational elements in this organization makes the Bank an extremelyunique player in the international banking arena. By working inPersonal Financial Services, I am in fact embracing all the country'spositive development in the banking industry as the market deregulatesand local residents' wealth accumulates. I am lucky that I have beengrowing along with the organization ever since the day I joined theBank. Over the past 10 years I have witnessed an enlightening economiccycle full of the flavors and excitement of volatility, downturn, rebound, revival, reform and evolution. And HSBC, with its consistentmanagement approach and solid development plan ensures that I will gainexperience, learn and grow in this world of constant changes.

Admittedly, it is not an easy job but one should definitely expectchallenges in exchange for quicker personal development. I joined thebank as Banker Development Trainee over six years ago and I am nowmanaging a balance sheet of more than RMB2bn and seeing decent revenuecontributions. I can comfortably talk to either the CEO/CFO about theirstrategy or the treasury assistant about operational details; I haveestablished good credibility and a strong network both externally andinternally.

Five years have past since my first working day in HSBC. This is not along time, but it has been long enough for me to transform from a freshgraduate to a team leader of the Shanghai Hong Kong-desk Team.
Since joining the bank as a banker trainee, I have been through thegeneral banker training program, including classroom training anddifferent postings for on-the-job training. My first job was withGuangzhou branch as Counter Executive leading a team of five people, all of whom had much more experience than me. It was a great challengebut the words from my first mentor inspired me: “technical experienceis not the only key, you can always prove yourself and do better thanothers if you look at things with a broad view.” I took the words withme since then and tried my best to apply them all along the way.
After I graduated from the two-year trainee program, I joined theCommercial Banking (CMB) team in Shanghai. Here I met a group of lovelycolleagues: smart and helpful. Together with them, I won customers’trust, developed a diversified portfolio and doubled the wallet share,of which I am very proud. More than that, I learned a lot fromcustomers’ vision and market intelligence. CMB has inspired me to workhard with my talented colleagues and I appreciate the fair workenvironment.
Five years is a long time in today’s banking world and more and morepeople keep asking me why I am still with HSBC. Every time I have beenasked, I said nothing but just smiled. I say to myself:’ I am still atrainee with HSBC, and my learning path in the Bank will never end.’ |
