Deloitte Group Assessment Sharing
Time: 24 October 2008, 16:00-18:00
Venue: One Pacific Place (Deloitte Office)
Interviewees: 8 candidates (1 from HKB, 1 from HKUST, 6 from HKU)
Interviewers: One HR manager (Peggy), one senior manager from TAX (Raymond?).
Topic: As member of the committee (members are from different functions), please suggest 5 strategies to fulfill ONE of the three objectives the telecom company wants to achieve to expand their market globally. Note that the company is a leading company in the domestic market and its main product are private communication systems and information systems. The three objectives are:
1. Reduce the product’s time to market;
2. Differentiate the product in innovation, quality and customer service;
3. Build a diversified (culture and background) workforce in international market.
We were asked to focus on the SECOND objective. I think they will ask different groups to talk about different objectives, based on the same company information.
Time arrangement:
10 minutes: Each one read the material and develops one strategy and thinks about its rationale;
35 minutes: Group discussion and preparation for presentation; (Any language is OK.)
20 minutes: Presentation in English; (Note that every member must present!)
10 minutes: Q&A. (Note that the interviewers may not ask everyone and they may ask only one or two questions.)
Details and tips in each session:
1. Before the assessment: We needed to fill a form to submit our CV and transcripts first. The HR manager also asked us to reconsider our application regarding the departments since consulting is very competitive and they always prefer experienced candidates. Audit hires the most and tax is the second largest hiring department. Then she read the instructions. Note that we can NOT ask any questions in later sessions until the Q&A session when they will ask us about our proposed strategies. We also had to make a brief self-introduction, which included name, university, major and the reason why you choose Deloitte.
2. Self reading: Read the instructions carefully, note that “Do not divide the whole group into sub groups!”, “Focus on only ONE objective”, etc.
3. Group discussion:
Ø Pay special attention to the time management. In our case, we all agreed to have one of us keep an eye on the timing and keep reminding us of the time. So we did great in time management and the interviewers praised us for this as well.
Ø Everyone should participate. Make sure nobody is silent in the process and everyone has the chance to contribute. Luckily, members in our group are all very active and we had a great time in brain storming. After the interview, the HR manager told me that the most important attribute they are looking for in group assessment is “Team spirit”. So do remember that this is not “ONE- MAN show”.
Ø Clarify the objective and framework first before discussion. Our group agreed to my proposal, which is based on the three differentiators: innovation, quality and customer service. Then under each differentiator we talked about the strategies relating to functional departments. It worked well and I think we were very clear in the logical thinking and discussion.
Ø Leave enough time for presentation preparation. We left 10 minutes for preparation, the first 5 minutes for group discussion and the last 5 minutes for each one to prepare their parts. (Note that the interviewer said we should NOT do this since this is sub grouping! Luckily we performed well as a group anyway. )
4. Presentation:
Ø Each of us presented one part: summary, 5 strategies and conclusion. Two candidates may involve in one part if the part contains more content.
Ø Have one person be the time manager and remind other members of the time, especially when they talk too much. In our case, since I began with the summary, so I also kept an eye on the time control.
5. Q&A:
Ø To our surprise, we only got two questions. “Which strategy is the most important one?” “Which part of this group assessment is the most challenging to you?” The HR manager asked two of us, who I think are not as outgoing as others. I guess the manger want to know whether we have clear communication within the group if everyone has a focus on one aspect during presentation. They gave great answers. So I think we should not miss any points in this session.
6. After the interview:
Ø A great time to ask questions about Deloitte. I think this part really depends on the interviewers’ attitude and personalities. If they welcome questions, do not miss it.
Ø We chatted for around half an hour and talked about the working style, job duties, and their advices for us fresh graduates in career design, etc.
Other tips:
Ø Arrive 15 minutes earlier at the least. You will meet other candidates while waiting. Make good use of the time to do some initial networking and get familiar with each other, which will definitely benefit your teamwork. In our case, we already knew each other’s basic information before the assessment. And amazingly, we all come from mainland, so in discussion we use Mandarin.
Ø The case itself is not that important. They will pay attention to how you develop the idea and communicate to others. So do not worry too much if you meet an unexpected case.
Ø Be relaxed and be yourself. Interview is a two-way process, so do not worry too much and try too hard. They just want to know more about you.
Ø Take initiative and contribute more. Take the opportunity to sell yourself and take care of others at the same time.
Good Luck to All!
