本来申请的hk ibd，但莫名被分到bj ecm的面试。准备了几天今天一大早面完，来应届生复盘一下，顺便分享一下答题思路希望可以帮到大家。

一共两轮，2 interviewersper round, each round lasts for 20-25 min. Round 1 是很和蔼的ecm md和ed，自我介绍完就是tell me about yourself.

Why ECM? (Focuson market + deal experience; previous consulting experience thus want to helpclients; previous PE and HF thus understand equity market)

What do youthink ECM does on a daily basis? (pitch to clients; I don’t think you guysbuild models, right? – No, we don’t; help potential investors understand equitystories; maintain long term relationship with clients)

What haveyou done to prepare for this interview? (read about ECM; prepped CV; read marketnews; read about GS as a company)

Tell meabout the Budweiser deal (I read it a while ago, so only remember it as Budweiser’sAsia business. Can you tell me more? – The interviewer basically told me whatthe deal was all about)

What do youthink is moving the market? (China economy slowdown + trade war)

Anyquestions for us?

How did yousecure xx investors in Hansoh Pharma deal? (because we maintained LTrelationship with clients)

Why ECM?

I’m notconvinced, it seems you would be a perfect fit for PE. Why ECM? (faster dealflow in IBD, like the level of energy)

It says onyour CV your GPA is xxx, probably the lowest I’ve ever seen. Any explanations?(admit + I also spent time joining case comps, won prize, joined student clubs,do this and that)

Yeah but weat GS hire the smartest people. How can you convince me that you are smartenough? (on exchange I took an advanced econ theory course talking about NobelLaureates’ work, and rank first in class; praised by professor)

Why BJ? (personal:like the sense of humor; career: most dynamic city in China)

If you haveoffer in HK and we gave you BJ, would you take it. (Yes of course)

Explain tome on your CV the HF experience: how do you identify the “cheap but valuable”stocks? (PE and PEG as preliminary criteria)

It says onyour CV you also learned derivatives. Is that mandatory? (Yes)

What aboutComputer Programming? (Electives. I learned C++ and Python – Oh you learnedC++? – Yes C++ helps me understand how Python works on a more fundamentallevel, e.g. numeric and character variables are named differently in C++ butthey are the same Python)

Any questions for us?

Takeaway:

-         Don’ttake any challenge personal. Smile, admit, and explain. Turn the question around so that it works to your benefit.

-         Useexamples when you can, and use the strongest ones. This is your chance toimpress them and present yourself so don’t wait until they ask. They might notknow what to ask :)

-         Keepit conversational

-         Ifthe bank has no tremendous deals read the top 3 deals in the market instead!!!

-         Moveon to prepare the next one!
