奥纬咨询(Oliver Wyman) 经验分享- 金融服务咨询
Part I: Our people
“It was one of the wisest decisions I have ever made to choose OW-FS out of
many top investment bank offers. It perfectly fits my career goal to have wor
k experience in both challenging strategic consulting and exciting financial
services industry, especially in such a completely international environment.
The firm is remarkably un-hierarchical: we have “happy hour” together ever
y Friday in the office; we enjoyed great time in the house-warming party of o
ur director; we have global firm days with colleagues all around the world in
one of the global offices every year, and quarterly regional firm days in ou
r Asian offices; and we have a say on what project we want to be staffed on!
I deeply feel that choosing OW not only means choosing a job, but also means
choosing a faster career path, a global perspective and a well-balanced happy
life. It is a fantastic place for me to learn, to grow, and to make best fri
ends.”
——Tammy Tan (谭彦), Consultant (Peking University)
“It's exciting to be one of the first generation of the staff in Oliver Wyma
n Financial Services China practice and to grow with it. My job search strate
gy was to look for a globally large firm with a locally small feel, which is
exactly what OW offers. Working with nice people on challenging assignments i
s more than enough to convince me to stay with the firm, but actually the ret
urn is far more than that - international exposure, prestigious reputation an
d meritocracy etc. all meet and beyond my expectation. So far I've spent 60%
of my time outside China, traveled to 6 countries, worked with 13 teammates f
rom 11 countries, did projects across 4 domains, and I’ve just been with the
firm for one year!”
——Bingbing Liu (刘冰冰), Consultant (Tsinghua University)
“I was facing three dilemmas when graduating last year, as many of my peers
did: To look for a job gaining work experience or to study abroad getting int
ernational exposure? To have a real career or a stable life/family? To work f
or a financial institution or a consulting firm? Oliver Wyman offers me the p
erfect solution. By working for Oliver Wyman, I have the opportunity to work
abroad through the global staffing policy (I have already been to New York an
d Seoul for trainings within one month after joining the firm); I have the op
portunity to have a career as well as a life; I have the opportunity to work
with the world’s top 100 financial institutions as their consultant.”
——Crystal Yu (于扬杰), Consultant (Peking University)
“I joined Oliver Wyman after graduating from business school in the U.S., wh
ere I met one of the founders Mr. Bill Wyman. I was impressed by his sincerit
y of sharing experience and insight about career and life, among which the st
ory how Alex Oliver and he started Oliver Wyman Financial Services triggered
my interest. In particular, I was impressed by one of the principles they env
isioned for the firm - to create a consulting firm where one can have a long-
term career with a balanced work/life, while the typical situation was that m
any talented consultants did not see consulting as a viable long-term career
partly because the work was too demanding to have a life at the same time.
Since I joined the firm, I have been glad to see that the core values behind
the founding of the firm are still alive, with challenges nevertheless, the f
irm is trying hard to keep them. Among the core values, what I appreciate the
most are:
·global staffing, which is very valuable in building up diverse exposures,
and is something very few firms can truly offer. I have been working with
leading financial institutions in the U.S., UK, Australia, Singapore, Hong
Kong and China.
·genuine dedication to work/life balance, which is still very unique in
today's consulting industry. The firm believes that a balanced work/life
and having time for the interest outside of work can make people more
creative, which in turn contributes to high quality work.
·emphasizing on output not input, which means so long as you do a good
job, you can decide how and where you spend your time
·meritocracy - you can grow as fast as your aspiration and ability allow,
no tenure-based entitlement or any other artificial barriers
·ownership mentality - you see something that does not work, you have a
chance to fix it; while the firm is growing big, it still maintains an
entrepreneurship culture.
So if asking me what makes Oliver Wyman different and worth joining, without
doubt, I would say - it is its unique culture with a set of progressive core
values that the firm is dedicated to live on.”
——Sarah Song (宋江蔚), Manager (Fudan University)

Part II: Our projects
Geographically, in additional to the projects located in China, Oliver Wyman
China office consultants have been assigned on projects across various region
s around the globe, including Europe, US , Australia, and other Asian countri
es.
Case 1:【Asia market strategy】– Leading global universal bank
For a leading global universal bank, Oliver Wyman was engaged to develop the
Asia market strategy for its retail structured products. We first conducted a
n in-depth review of the current state and opportunities in major Asia market
s including Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Southeast Asia etc;
then assessed the client’s competitive position in each of the markets. In
addition to analyzing the market and the competitors, we also assessed the cl
ient’s capabilities in product designing, pricing, and after-sales service.
As the deliverable, we developed tailored market strategy and provided recomm
endations on changes needed for its internal capabilities.
Case 2:【Strategic organization and process redesign】– Large state-owned ba
nk
As part of a strategic organizational transformation led by the Bank’s CEO,
Oliver Wyman helped a large state-owned bank redesign the overall organizatio
n and core business processes. Our focus was on four of the core central func
tions - credit, risk, finance and audit, and their role in the related core b
usiness processes. Bringing in our knowledge and expertise drawn from global
client assignments, we designed tailored solution for the bank covering opera
tions in headquarter and representative branches. Our work has added critical
value to the Bank where the organization and process are significantly laggi
ng behind what is needed for being competitive in the market.
Case 3:【China market entry strategy】- Leading global insurance firm
For a leading global composite insurance group, Oliver Wyman developed potent
ial business models for entering China’s life and general insurance market.
We conducted a review of alternative business strategies and projected financ
ial profitability relating to different business models. As part of the strat
egy enabling initiatives, we also developed selection criteria for evaluating
potential partners and helped scanning for potential partnering possibilitie
s. At the end, we conducted an initial due diligence investigation of key po
tential partners from an outside-in perspective.
Case 4 :【Risk management reform】- Major domestic bank
For a major domestic bank, we have been assisting in a multi-year comprehensi
ve risk management reform program to transform the bank from a traditional le
nding house to a leading bank with smart use of advanced risk management conc
epts and technologies. The program covers all critical risk measurement and m
anagement initiatives, including:
·Advise senior management on the overall masterplan and roadmap to systemati
cally building up the Bank’s risk management capabilities to meet both
strategic business needs and regulatory requirements
·Design and help implement advanced credit risk measurement techniques for
both corporate and retail banking exposure. This closes a critical gap in
the Ba nk’s risk measurement capability
·Synthesize Oliver Wyman experience with the findings from the credit risk
measurement projects to advise the Bank on credit risk management
improvements including e.g refining underwriting standards based on
lessons from forensic analysis of losses, improving collection efficiency,
improving credit data architecture and data quality management processes,
blueprinting monitoring losses for early warning etc.
·Advise senior management on building up robust risk governance and
organization to effectively apply and leverage the advanced risk measurement
tools for strategy and business optimization
·Educated and advised the management on applying risk management to
strategic business uses including overall business strategy, effective
pricing, credit process efficiency etc.
