You are spending the dayat your EY office. During a team meeting, Hilda mentions that GWE areinterested in how new technology could help their existing processes. Tristanhas been frustrated with the lack of progress GWE has made regardinginnovation, and believes they could use technology to make their existingfinancial reporting and auditing processes much more efficient. Hilda shares anarticle she has come across, and asks the team for their ideas.
Please review the article, and share any ideas you have for making use of technology within GWE’sfinancial reporting or audit processes. Please include any benefits and risksof the technology you can foresee.
3 of the Top 5 TechnologyDevelopments to Watch
Technology continues tochange the way we live and work. Understanding what to expect in the future iscrucial in making the most of new technology. Below we share three of our topfive of the most exciting developments.
Chatbots
We expect chatbots tobecome extremely prominent as developments in artificial intelligence allowthem to make sense of the questions and answers they receive. In the nearfuture, chatbots will be able to mimic human interaction so well that youprobably won’t be able to tell them apart: a scary thought indeed! This meansgathering information and customer service will be a much quicker – andmore pleasant –experience for both the customer and organisation.
Blockchain
Predominantly used forcryptocurrencies, blockchain has huge potential and revolutionises the waytransactions are made and verified. When a transaction is made between twoparties, a record is made on multiple nodes in a network and updated with eachtransaction. The value of blockchain comes in preventing fraudulent transactions:because there are multiple nodes verifying every transaction, it is impossibleto ‘trick’ the network into using the same money in two separate transactions. As aresult, blockchain is both secure and efficient. The applications of blockchainare wide-reaching and it has the potential to be used on a commercial scale inhigh street banks once issues around privacy are addressed.
Zero-Knowledge Proof
This development meansthat absolute privacy online is a genuine prospect. In practice, it means thatyou can verify your age without sharing your date of birth, or that you haveenough money in your account without sharing your bank balance. Though thecurrent methods for zero-knowledge proof are slow and intensive, time is theonly obstacle for overcoming this challenge. For services where privacy is anissue, this development offers an exciting solution.
2. Your team have developed atechnology-based proposal to increase the efficiency of GWE’saudit process. Hilda suggests that you join her at a meeting with Tristan andsome other senior employees at GWE’s main warehouse to shareyour team’s idea. During the journey there, she mentions that they are unlikely tohave much knowledge of this type of technology, and may also be sceptical aboutusing it.
How would you approachcommunicating the proposal to GWE?
3. The following questionwill help you determine your suitability for a role within Assurance. Yourresponses to these questions will not be scored, so it is important you answerhonestly and take time to reflect on the questions asked.
While working inAssurance, you will be required to spend the majority of your working week atclient sites, which will likely involve frequent travel and could, on occasion, include staying away from home.
