On my way back from Partner Interview of KPMG, I got a call from AB InBeV telling me they decided to give me the global MT offer. I felt weird at that moment while thinking about the PhD application. OK. I finally can call it an end for the job hunting. I am lucky because I was only interviewed by two companies, and successfully made myself into the final round. I am writing down something to record the track of the offer, share some experiences with the coming-ups, and memorize this offer.
Step 1: On-line application
Language: English
This part is to test the personality of candidate to see if the applicant is compatible with the culture of the company or industry. Some of the questions are vocabulary tests. If the candidate passes this step, he will receive a link to another on-line test, through which the company will see the personal character of candidate in a deeper level.
Suggestions: If you really want to join the company. You’d better answer the questions by thinking yourself as a relatively aggressive, objective-oriented, open, and honesty person. That is what I sensed from the talk with the HR in the second round interview.
Step 2: The first round interview
Mode: Case study/Group interview
Location: New Peal River Hotel, GZ
Language: Chinese
The case was to find out reasons why the sales or profit of a gum company decreased and ways to solve the problem. Details can be found in some job hunting BBS. The members of my group were super nice. We really worked as a team to process the case. So 3 of 5 members entered the next round.
Suggestions:
Conciseness: Answer what you have been asked.
Logic: Give your answers in this form
Reason 1:……………….. Solution1:…………..
Reason 2:……………….. Solution2:………….
Reason 3:……………….. Solution13………….
Overall:
My major is chemical engineering. So you do not need to worry about those professional words.
Think the problems by following your style, but make your points sound reasonable to others.
PLZ do not challenge opinions that are different or opposite to yours. It is just a waste of time and destructive. You might speak out your mind by starting with “I have another opinion.” And then let the group decide which is right or more reasonable.
You do not need to be the leader or final presenter. As what I have said above, you only to contribute what you think to your group, and make your points clear.
If most of the members do not agree with you, you can spend some time on convincing them. If it does not work, then forget it to move on to other parts. Do not even repeat it once and once again. If so, you are dead on. However, if it does work, it will be definitely be the shiny part of the whole process.
To be a last speaker during the discussion can be a choice with high risk and gains. I strongly suggest summarizing the points by following the form as said above. At the end you can add one sentence “Did I miss something?”
After the discussion, there was a short presentation. Before the presentation, leave some times to let the presenter go through the presentation. And others check it.
Step 3: The second round interview
Mode: One-on-one interview
Location: New Peal River Hotel, GZ
Language: Chinese
Sharing your personal experience with HR
Suggestions: Before the interview, read your CVs and think about how to answer the potential questions such as why you joined a kind of community or what did you learn form kinds of interns. The guy that interviewed me is called Michael Yuan, the HR of the company. It cannot be said as a formal interview. It was more like a casual chatting. During the conversation you should refer some examples to show you are a person who is willing to success and open to different culture, enjoys taking challenges, and also, can work efficiently under high pressure. As I think, these are the personal features the company is seeking for candidates.
Step4: Business Game
Mode: Plan strategy for a company to make it more profitable each year/ Group interview
Location: Crown Hotel, SH
Language: English
The information about how the game plays can be found somewhere else. Well. Whether the company is more profitable is not important. What they concern is how you and your team behave.
Suggestions: PLZ use calculator properly, which means do not stick to calculator without saying a word. Give a reasonable guess, and then do the calculation to finalize your decisions. I think this method really works since 2 of 3 members of my group entered next round, despite of the fact that we are the only team that lead the company to be less profitable than last year. The interviewers want to know if you can think logically, predict outcomes properly, and explain why you win or loose reasonablely. As for other suggestions, the content in step 2 is also applicable.
Step 5: The P/VP interviews
Mode: Five-on-five individual interview
Location: Rui An Plaza, SH
Language: English
Suggestions: Because all the foreign interviewers are not English native speakers, you should pay much attention when he is saying something. It would be such an embarrassment that you do not get his points. Some of questions are related to your CVs. They kind of interest in your intern experiences. Some are about your understandings of the culture of the company. Most are like this way. Put you into a situation, and ask you what you will do to accomplish a project or convince the employers you are the best choice of all.
OK. It’s done. Hopefully it can really help the graduates who need it, especially for my alumni.
Job hunting is a though process. When lost we should keep telling us the best is yet to come.
