Question Number 26

Buying a Used Car

It is the responsibility of the car buyer to ensure that they are getting the best deal on a reliable used car. Although in the United States state governments have “lemon laws” to protect consumers, the parameters of these laws vary from state to state, and consumers ultimately hold the responsibility for their purchase.

Buyers can begin by researching the manufacturer and model in which they are interested as this provides valuable information that allows them to make a more informed purchasing decision. With this information, buyers can evaluate if a car has been maintained according to manufacturer’s standards as well as determine if the vehicle meets their needs. Miles per gallon, safety ratings, reliability, warranties, and performance – to name a few elements – should all be significant factors in a buyer’s purchase. Among the many tools available, consumers should use resources such as the Kelley Blue Book that evaluate model reliability and value in order to find the best vehicle that falls within their budget. Such resources can also provide national or local market prices for specific models that take into consideration vehicle mileage and condition.

Once the buyer has gathered sufficient information on the car make and model in which they are interested, then they can shop for a deal. While they often provide a convenient venue where one can view a variety of cars, typically the vehicles in used car lots are more expensive than those purchased directly from private owners because they have more overhead expenses.

Among these expenses is mechanical work that is performed on vehicles when they initially enter the lot. Buyers should always ask the salesperson what work was done on the car once it was acquired.

When considering a vehicle, the buyer should perform a quick inspection of it in which they check for rust on the undercarriage and body, tire tread depth, cosmetic condition and exhaust color. Each of these factors can give the buyer a quick overview of the car’s mechanical and cosmetic condition. If the car passes the inspection, and the buyer is still interested, negotiations for the vehicle may begin. As a condition of purchase, the buyer should always have the vehicle inspected by a third-party Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified mechanic. A thorough inspection can reveal problems that the buyer missed, and any repairs needed on the vehicle can be used to drive down the seller’s asking price.

________________________________________

Choose which of the following below best describes a buyer on-lot vehicle inspection:

Checking for paint job, exhaust color, tire tread depth.

Checking for rust, tire wear, exhaust color.

Checking for rust, paint job, exhaust color.

Forestry Forestry is the art, science, and practice of managing forests and related natural resources. Silviculture, a related science, involves the growing and tending of trees and forests. Modern forestry generally concerns itself with: facilitating the use of forests for timber, wildlife habitats, natural water quality regulation, landscape and community protection, creating aesthetically appealing landscapes and biodiversity and watershed management. Forestry has developed into a field with a broad array of specialties typically requiring a bachelor’s degree or higher. Industry, government agencies, conservation groups, urban park boards, citizens” associations or private landowners may all employ foresters. Industrial foresters are predominantly involved in planning timber harvests and forest regeneration, while urban foresters focus on the management of forest and natural landscapes within city environments. Other foresters work in tree nurseries growing seedlings for regeneration projects, and still others are involved with tree genetics or developing new building systems as forest engineers. Traditionally, professional foresters develop and implement “forest management plans” that rely on tree inventories showing an area’s topographical features as well as its distribution of trees (by species) and other plant cover. In addition, these plans also consider the proximity of roads, culverts and human habitations as well as hydrological conditions and soil reports as factors that affect the area to be shaped by the forester. Finally, forest management plans include the projected use of the land and a timetable for that use. Foresters also frequently develop post-harvest site plans. These may call for reforestation, ** control, fertilization or the spacing of young trees (thinning of trees that are crowding one another).Other duties of foresters may include preventing and combating insect infestation, disease, forest and grassland fires. Foresters also may be involved in wildlife conservation planning and watershed protection.
