THE SWIC COMPANY
SWICis a regional dairy product producer and distributor serving northern Illinois, Indiana, and southern Wisconsin.SWIC started with a single plant (Kokomo in 1925) and currently has six plants located in South Bend, Kokomo, Hammond, Chicago, Peoria, and Madison.Significant differences exist in the costs of: (a) labor, (b) ingredients, and (c) operations between six plants.Average unit production costs for each plant are given in Exhibit 1 along with their daily production capacities.
SWIC's entire product line is produced at each plant and the average selling price of a typical product is$23 per box. Each box contains twelve cartons of ice cream and company policy is to maintain uniform delivered prices.

SWIC is considering building a new plant in Rockford, Illinois. The Rockford plant is expected to cost $4,000,000 and will produce ice cream at an average cost of$15 per box.Daily production capacity of the new plant will be 1,200 boxes per day.Exhibit 3 gives estimated delivery costs between plants (including the proposed plant at Rockford) and SWIC’s market areas.
